SNAKE!!

I've just had the 'snake in the house' initiation.

That's what I just sent as a message to my friend Andrea, trying to be as nonchalant as possible because I assumed it's the sort of thing that just happens. But her reply was "Are you bloody serious? Wholly crap! Never has happened to me. Scary!"

I think it was more scared of me than I was of it. But it's kind of hard to tell, it was fairly expressionless. I was just walking down the stairs and saw this little face looking at me from behind the cupboard. Cheeky bugger, it was only a little thing and was wrapped around a plastic kitchen trolley type thing, so once I felt sure that the snake wasn't going to launch itself at high speed towards my face, I just moved the whole trolley outside and Snakey-Geoff slithered away.

I should probably get something better to cover the window.

  1. Hi Jon. Just remember, so long as a man's soul is pure, then the snake bite can't harm him (the late great Vivian Stanshall, circa 1969). I can just picture you in about 20 years time, a grizzled old ex-pat, sweat lines engraved into your face, faintly delirious with jungle fever and still harbouring a faint yearning for the soft life back in the old country.... but in the meantime, enjoy your adventure. 2. Hi Jon. Just to save you the trouble of Googling Viv Stanshall (tricky with no internet anyway), he was the sort-of singer with the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band. You might like to try them out on your American friends to see if they've heard of them. Very much doubt it somehow. Guess you probably haven't either.
I just said goodbye to an aquaintance who manages a sports bar in Bangkok, and previously did 4 years teaching English / running various bars in Koh Samui. He'd been home to his Dad's funeral before scuttling back to the warmth of his adopted home. Apart from occasional (alcohol-induced) faint delirium he doesn't seem much like Jan's vision of an ex-pat yet.
Enjoy your year in Thailand - sounds like a blast so far. Hope it remains so once you get inside a classroom. Terry

  3. I was wondering who Vivian Stanshall was, but I do know the Bonzo Dogs. I doubt the Americans would understand, but sometimes they do surprise me.

I've only been here a few weeks but the thought of becoming a grizzled old expat over the next 20 years does sound appealing in a way...I'll see how 1 year goes anyway!
